Here is an example of an interesting email exchange from yesterday which I’ve titled Shilling for Shills?I haven’t determined that the source is legitimate, so actual names and specific references are removed. The email conversation with “Scout” went like this:

S: I saw your blog and wondered if you’d be open in posting one of our informational … paragraphs for a fee? Let me know if you’d be interested and I will send you our paragraph for review. Thanks and hope to hear from you soon,

Me: Perhaps … Informational paragraphs? For who and for what purpose?

S: Here you go..

[Paragraph Omitted]

Thanks let me know your cost for this post – I am not really looking for traffic or anything in particular and you can keep posting to your blog as usual after posting.

Me: Thanks, but no. After all, this is just information that is available at (X)s’ website. I don’t see how my site posting this material would be of help to you. Thanks anyway

S: How about a (X) book review paragraph?

Me: Sorry, no.

S: Thank you for your time.

A scan of political contribution records shows (X) contributing over $60,000 in the last two years to candidates of the (National) party. A bio on (X’s) website stated that (X) raised over $500,000 for a (National) Party Presidential candidate in 2004.

I was especially impressed by the permission offered to “keep posting to your blog as usual after posting”. It seemed to me sort of like, “Nice place you got here, it’d be a real shame if anything were to, uh happen to it.” Either this was an attempt to enlist paid shills for a political drive or some type of a phishing scheme. What’s up with that? Does anyone else get letters like this? Or does everyone get these?

. . .

Update: Say Uncle gets an Instalanche link to his McCain-Feingold post!
